Drive with a PRO and learn to drive like a PRO with the National Auto Sport Association
HyperDRIVEs are our hugely popular introductory program for new drivers. Sanctioned by the National Auto Sport Association (NASA), HyperDRIVEs give you and your car an easy, safe, and affordable way to get on the track.
All participants must attend a brief classroom session with an instructor. The class will go over basic car setup, instructions, techniques, and flags. While you are attending the class, your car will be going through a basic technical inspection outside to ensure it's safe and ready for the track.
The Patriot Course at Virginia International Raceway is a 12-turn, 1.1-Mile road course nestled inside the historic and world famous 3.27-Mile Full Course. The track features various elevation changes and provides drivers with an exciting and challenging layout to learn on.
Frequently asked questions
What kind of car do i need?
Basically, all you need is a safe car. The car does not have to be fancy or fast. Our most common vehicle is your everyday run-of-the-mill daily driver on regular street tires. Previous participants have brought everything from Hyundais to Ferraris.
ARE THERE ANY DRIVER REQUIREMENTS?
Participants must be at least 18 years old (16 with parental consent) and possess a valid driver's license.
What should I wear?
Dress for this activity is a sleeved shirt (short sleeves are ok, just no tank tops), long pants, and closed toed shoes (no Crocs or slip-ons). Because this event takes place in May, we understand it may be warm during the day at the event. You are welcome to bring a change of clothes and change before and after your session if you prefer.
Do I need a helmet?
Yes, you must have a SNELL SA2010 or newer helmet to participate in HyperDRIVEs. If you do not have a helmet, loaner helmets will be available for you to use.
What is involved in the technical inspection?
The technical inspection goes over various aspects of the vehicle to ensure it will be safe for you and everyone else on the track. As a general rule, an "unmodified" factory vehicle will pass tech without any problems, but cars that have been modified (seats, roll bars, belts, etc...) must conform to the preparation rules. Your vehicle must also be free from loose items; such as floor mats, beverage bottles, loose change, etc... If you'd like to inspect your own car ahead of time to ensure you won't have any issues at the track, you may use this checklist as a preliminary guide.
i own a convertible, can i still drive?
Yes, however all convertibles must have a roll bar that can withstand the weight of the vehicle in the event of a rollover. For example, if you have a Mazda Miata, you must have a roll bar installed to participate. If you have a Honda S2000, your head must come below the factory issued hoop or you would need an aftermarket roll bar. Most convertibles must have a full roll bar. Any convertible with pop-up protection must have it's pop-up protection locked in the "UP" position in order to be eligible at VIR.
ARE THERE DIFFERENT LEVEL GROUPS?
No, because this is designed as an introductory program, there is only one group.
How many times do i get to go on track?
Each HyperDRIVE session consists of one (1) classroom session and one (1) on-track session. The classroom session is approximately 20-minutes and the on-track session is approximately 30-minutes.
CAN I SIGN UP FOR MORE THAN ONE hyperdrive?
Yes, many participants sign up for multiple sessions throughout the course of the event. If you end up signing up for more than one session, let the instructor know at your first classroom session. If you do well in your first session, you may be able to skip your other classroom sessions.
ARE THERE OTHER CARS ON TRACK WITH ME?
Yes, there will be approximately 15-20 cars on track at the same time spaced out accordingly, but HyperDRIVE is not a race. Please note, passing is allowed in HyperDRIVE and only when approved by the instructors.
Body damage to cars very rarely occurs, however you are encouraged to check with your insurance company regarding coverage. Most insurance companies cover damages to your car during High Performance Driving Events (HPDE). Be careful if they tell you that it is not covered. Agents have been wrong before. Ask them for a list of "exclusions" in YOUR policy and consult an expert.
CAN I CAMP OUT FOR THIS EVENT?
Yes, this is HyperFEST. One of the best things about HyperFEST is being able to camp out and hang with old and new friends, as well as enjoy everything this event has to offer. If you'd prefer to not camp out, there is a hotel located at the track and many other hotels available in neighboring towns such as Danville, VA, South Boston, VA, Roxboro, NC, and Milton, NC.
What fuel octanes does VIR have available at the track?
For a list of available options, please visit VIR's Fuel Information Page for current information on fuel grades offered.
CAN I BRING MY GOLF CART, PIT BIKE, ATV, ETC?
All unlicensed pit, paddock and other off-road vehicles (i.e., golf cart, pit bike, ATV, etc.) used at VIR must be registered with VIR and have a current off-road vehicle pass displayed on the vehicle at all times. You can purchase your Off-Road Vehicle Pass online here.
CAN I RENT A GOLF CART?
Yes, VIR offers golf carts for rent to both participants and spectators. You can learn more about their golf cart rental options by visiting Golf Cart Rentals.
IS THERE A MAP OF VIR AVAILABLE?
Yes, you may find it here.
While we prefer warm and sunny days, it doesn't always happen to work out that way. Since the event is in May, showers have been known to make a brief appearance. Because HyperFEST is an outdoor event, we run rain or shine, but that doesn't mean you still can't have fun.
